SURPRISE!! Not.

Black is white white is black...and we are surprised why exactly? Wasn't this foretold? Weren't the words given to us to hear? Didn't the prophets speak? Didn't God tell us this would come? Our "surprise" isn't because we haven't been paying attention. Our surprise is because we, individually, are here while it is happening. Our surprise isn't "outrage" but just the guilt of children caught with our hands in the cookie jar. We knew. We were told. But we didn't pay attention and were calculating in our disobedience...Even when we were obedient. This is the result of our own sin.

Our leadership was given to us. Our laws are allowed. The sheer insanity we are witnessing in this land is the same as Israel allowed in the time of the Two Kingdoms. We aren't even as holy as Sodom or Gomorrah, not even as holy as Nineveh. At least the former knew what they did was wrong, and at least the latter repented. WE have reveled in our filth like Israel did before God allowed Babylon to come down on them like a hammer.

We sit around calling ourselves the chosen of God and let the hungry and homeless increase, let the children be sacrificed on the altars of our own convenience and pleasure, tithe our incomes to gladiators and actors, and sit back on our laurels and enjoy our bread and circuses while nothing but filthiness engulfs us and suddenly we are aware because someone sold infant body parts or sued some nuns? No...This is not "surprising". This is simply God making us fully and totally aware of how much we have allowed in our fat lives because we, the church, couldn't be bothered to get up off our collective lazy, comfortable, rusty-dusties and tell folks they are wrong. Our ears are tickled, our bellies are full, our eyes are blinded with bright lights and big cities and our ears are stopped up.

What, exactly, did we expect?

Lord have mercy on me, a sinner.
