When Lent Makes You Nuts

So we're midway through and frankly I think this has to be the weirdest Lenten season I have experienced to date. Granted, I am only 7 years old (converted 2 March 2008) but this one takes the cake for weird thus far.

"How weird is weird?" you ask.

Well, the season began the last week of February and immediately all kinds of snowy, icy hell broke loose. Almost all of the Clean Week services were cancelled due to the weather being bad and roads icy.

The first Sunday of Lent, called Sunday of Orthodoxy, Divine Liturgy was cancelled due to icy roads but somehow I did not get the memo that the evening Pan Orthodox vesperal services for Sunday of Orthodoxy was NOT cancelled, By the time I figured it out (that is actually read my email) services were half over and the twenty minute drive to church would have rendered it moot for me anyway.

Second week...more snow. More cancelled services. The Sunday of St Gregory of Palamas liturgy was on and I attended but somehow everything was just plain off. And let's not discuss the choir. I have no idea what happened there.

Then this week there is a soccer issue. [vent] I have no idea what it is with soccer leagues that they simply MUST schedule games before noon on a Sunday. WTH is that about anyway? I'm sorry some of us do not worship at the altar of FIFA nor make sacrifices to Messi and Ronaldo. The thing is if Yon Boy misses a game or a practice he gets penalized because soccer is the end all and be all of life. So I entered into negotiations so that my son isn't penalized because the soccer league is run by a bunch of irreligious folk who have no regard for those who actually have a conviction. Having to do that left me feeling rather hypocritical and frustrated.  And don't say find another league, they are all pretty much run by secularists and who don't give a flying fart about such things because...soccer. Trust me, I would have picked a different sport altogether. [/vent]

Yeah I said it. Don't like it? I hate it for you. Option 1: Don't read it. Option 2: Get over it.

So we are now entering the Halfway Point. Sunday of the Holy Cross and I've been pretty much expecting a volcano, or earthquake, or meteor strike or sharks falling from the sky or something equally bizarre to happen. Then a friend said, "It's just Lent being Lent. Stuff happens all the time but it doubles up during Lent." And she is right. Lent has been and will always be a time of testing and temptation, of the passions trying to supercede the virtues. But what did God say? He said we'd always be tested, always be tempted. But He said there would always be a way out of those temptations. The idea is not to let those passions distract into making excuses to sin.

The holy fathers call these idle thoughts and instincts and dispositions to sin "passions" (logismoi), and they come to the front of the mind when you are trying (under your own power) to become holy and good and sinless. Here's the thing about that...You can't. So all this stuff comes up that makes you stumble and all it is is you getting in the way of the Holy Spirit working humility and love in you.

So...how does one get through it and "move along home"? Since the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy us as we try to get home, throwing obstacles in our path and shutting doors on us as we try, how's person supposed to get from point A to point B without succumbing to some random temptation or passion and blowing up the nearest idiot's house?

The Desert Fathers had a response.
Saying number 714:
"Answer: When a logismos occurs in the soul and she [the soul] is able (by making a great effort) to expel it, another one comes and occupies her, and in this way, the soul opposing logismoi never has any time for the contemplation of God.
"Question: By what procedure can a logismos be referred to God?"
"Answer: If a logismos...comes upon you, immediately detach your mind from it and vigorously offer it up without hesitation, for hesitation is where conceding begins"
"Question: if a logismos of conceit that one has done well overcomes the soul, ought not the mind to contradict it?"
"Answer: No matter when one contradicts it, it becomes stronger and more violent. It finds more than you do to refute with, and the Holy Spirit does not supply aid to that extent. You find yourself in the situation of one who says "I am sufficient in myself to fight against the passions." Just as he who has a spiritual father casts all his concern upon him and is without care in all things and no longer in fear of judgement by God, so he who has dedicated himself to God ought not to be concerned by logismoi, to refute them or to allow them any place whatsoever to come into. And if one should get in, lift it up to your father and say "I have no trouble with this, look, here is my Father; He knows," and while you are still lifting it up half way, it has left you and is running away, for it will not be able to come to him with you. In the whole Church, there is not one activity greater than this one or more carefree."
~ (Will attribute and link when I find the citation. All I have is the quote right now.)
 Note to self. Emphasis mine.

Now I just need to remember that. I have a Spiritual Father and Godmother whom I often go to and cast my cares upon. They are my spiritual support system and have been doing this Lent crazy far longer than I have. I'll bet this year doesn't even ping on their radar.

Icon of All Saints
But as I said to my son today, we are also enjoined to pray (lift up the thought/temptation/logismoi) to God and He will remove it for us or show us how to conquer it. But we have to ask. And we are surrounded by the Great Cloud of Witnesses who are always praying to God. Why do we not ask their prayers? St Joseph is quick to hear as is the Theotokos (called She who is Quick to Hear) and the Archangel Gabriel and all the saints, known and unknown. What keeps us from asking their assistance when Lent (or any other time of the year) doesn't go according to plan?

Ummm....sloth, faint-heartedness, love of power, idle talk come to mind. Which is precisely what we ask God to remove when we pray the prayer of St Ephraim the Syrian which is the central prayer during the Lenten season. Frankly, I think it probably should be the central prayer of my personal rule all year long. If you haven't noticed, I'm somewhat of a hot mess and I readily acknowlege this fact.

O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despair, lust of power, and idle talk. But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant.
Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own sins, and not to judge my brother,
for blessed art Thou, unto ages of ages.
Amen.

If one has tools in one's tool box it would behoove one to use them, would it not?

Lord have mercy on me, a sinner.

Walking into the Door Jamb of Repentance

Meatfare is in three days which means Lent is only 10 days away.

And I am, as usual, so not ready.

I was thinking recently that I'm a mess. I do not even know how to repent even when my sin is right in front of me. I feel righteous even in the proclamation of my sin. Oh  Lord, how do I even begin to repent? I mean, it's ridiculous, why even try? I'm sitting here and the whole thing is a morass that I can't even begin to climb out of, let alone try to list and enumerate for a "good confession" (whatever that means).

And the more I set out to change and be better the worse it gets! Do not get me started on New Year's Resolutions. Those things have gone by the way side years ago. I mean why even bother when I know for a fact I am just going to say, "Screw it" and do whatever anyway. It's a bit discouraging to say the very least. And I am supposed to set an example for my son? God help him because my life as an object lesson definitely won't.

I am of the flesh, sold into slavery under sin. I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.

Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

Because I need some serious rescuing.
Not so much when you come to think about it

I like to think of myself as a Self-Rescuing Princess. I've totally had figure out how to get myself out of some pretty deep doo-doo in the past few years while at the same time trying to maintain a good demeanor and reminding myself that not all friends are enemies in disguise but most actually do want
to help and holding on to bitterness and anger isn't the way forward. I know this. It has been proven to me over and over again that one rotten apple does not spoil the whole bunch...But I still have this thing in me that says, "I can do it myself" like some demented, over-grown, spoiled brat toddler insisting on picking out my own clothes five minutes before my parents need to leave the house.

But.., when push comes to shove...I didn't get me out of those holes. A way was made for me by Someone who heard the prayers of so many people for me. People here below and those members of the Great Cloud of Witnesses who have seen I need some serious help here below.

Now it is my turn to do the work God has set aside for me to do in order to that I work out my salvation. I do so with much fear and trembling (and hopefully less complaining than I have been doing.) But in this way I will hopefully prove my faith is alive and it will be counted to me as righteousness, not just because I believe but because I am willing to prove it but working it.

It's hard to do this, I'm lazy and I am not fond of leaving home once I am here. I admit it. I would much prefer to be at home on my sofa, reading or fiddle farting around on teh interwebz, and just generally being a lump of uselessness. As Dr Phil is fond of saying however, that is not working for me anymore. There is too much to be done to rest on my laurels There are too many people who invested in me for me to not get up off my rusty dusty and prove that I am the woman God called worthy and renamed so many years ago.

My rescuer is God. He comes to me from the hills, never sleeping and never slumbering but making me able to stand against so many things that have come against me over the years so that I stand vindicated before those who would come against me. But it is not through any doing of my own. St Elizabeth and St Joseph and my mom and grandmother and family, blood and chosen, here on earth have had my back for years. Archangel Gabriel and the Theotokos looked after my son so that the words meant for me about my son prospering would be so.

And God has proven again and again that my delight in Him and in His Word and in His Church will see me through because He has called me from desolation to vindication and it is only by His word and will that this is true. My repentance, if so small before Him, is nothing compared to all He has done, and yet that is all He asks of me. My repentance and my obedience born from my love for Him. How could I not?

Who will rescue me from this body of death?

Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Lord have mercy on me a sinner!

Hello...My Name is Elizabeth and I am a Lenten Overachiever

Wow...I keep meaning to write something here but life keeps getting in the way. It's been a month since I had that idea for a blog post but I kept putting it off. Must not have been so important but still. Anyway, Lent is basically here. Yesterday was Meatfare and next Sunday is Forgiveness Vespers. I always look forward to Lent and then when it comes make a complete mess of it. I simply can't keep up with all the things I have in mind to do.

Lisa Simpson is not impressed
I mean, if you think about it, there's fasting and more prayers and "spiritual reading" and more services and fasting and alms giving and doing stuff for others and fasting and did I mention the fasting? There is a lot of stuff I have to do! And I only have FORTY DAYS TO CHANGE MY LIFE!! (If you would imagine that being read in a loud booming voice I would appreciate it. Thanks just all to pieces.) So it's kind of a BIG DEAL, if you know what I mean, and I persist in making a BIG DEAL of it every year. So much so that by the time the third or fourth Sunday of Lent rolls around, I am DONE and I sneak off to Red Robin for a bacon cheeseburger the size of Mississippi. Don't get me wrong, Fr N does not require of his flock that we do this, I just do it to myself because I think I may have masochistic tendencies and an overwhelming desire to overachieve in ways even Lisa Simpson would disapprove of.

Then, about a week ago, I read this article posted in a group I belong to on Facebook by a British priest of the Coptic Orthodox Church and what he said struck me kind of like a 2x4 to the back of the head.
The first secret is that it is not all about you, but is all about God. Stop thinking about yourself and ask for the grace to be occupied heart and mind with God. If we are occupied with ourselves during the season of Lent then we have entirely missed the point...
~ Abouna Peter Farrington
That was the first hurdle I had to get over. I need to get out of myself. It's not about me, it;'s not about the food. I can eat an entire cow everyday during this time if my heart and mind are focused solely on Christ and His will for me (which probably does not include eating an entire cow everyday, but I digress).

If all I am doing is not eating, the only benefit to me is some random physicality. And while physical health is not looked down upon, this body is going to die, rot, and decay into dust. Not pretty but true (and we western folks need to get over our fear of death). What will a healthy heart and bones do for my spirit? Not a lot. St John Chrysostom said, "...the honour of fasting consists not in abstinence from food, but in withdrawing from sinful practices; since he who limits his fasting only to an abstinence from meats, is one who especially disparages it. Dost thou fast? Give me proof of it by thy works!" (Homily III on the Statutes). But then again one might say, "Fasting  and the requisite prayers and service attending is a "work" set out for us by God (Ephesians 2:8-10) through the Apostles and Fathers and set forth in Scripture! I mean how am I supposed to do it without a bunch of complicated schedules and recipes (and a small amount of moaning and groaning so folks know how hard I am working)?"

Grace, grace, grace, and grace on top of grace. Grace is the active power of God in the life of a Christian. The power of God that gives the Christian the ability to "live up" to the works God has in mind for that Christian to do. As St Theophan the Recluse wrote,
The true Christian life is the grace-given life. Self-made life--however beautiful in appearance it may be and to whatever outward forms of the Christian life it may adhere--can never be Christian. The beginning of the true Christian life is established in a grace-given awakening. The one who responds to this action of grace is not deprived later of the guidance of grace or the communion with this grace during the time that he is faithful to it inspirations.
~ St Theophan the Recluse, Turning the Heart Toward God, p17
Abouna (Arabic for "Father") Peter says the same thing.
...[T]he more you think you can rely on your own strength of will to manifest the Christian life the further away from Christ you really are. The spiritual life in Christ must begin and end with grace and can only be experienced as the continuing gift of grace.
There is no way to successfully accomplish the fasting requirements of Lent without God's grace. Anyone can give up food, look at movie stars and other people famous for no good reason. But...what about taking true pity on the poor? Forgiving an enemy? Forgoing envy when someone accomplishes something I am still striving for or gets what I thought I wanted? Or passing by that biscuit* on the interwebz without wanting to eat him for breakfast? Or making particularly snarky and scathing remarks about people (like movie stars and people famous for no good reason) or biting off folks heads when they irk my nerves (read as "reveal my impatience, pride and sinfulness")? St John reminds us that if we fast from food but ignore the poor, revel in enmity and envy and lust and pride, and "devour one another" (Galatians 5:15) we may as well not fast at all. (Homily III).

It is only through the grace of God this is possible. Human willpower doesn't allow for these things. All willpower will do is make you decide to choose the salad instead of the steak.

Oh Lord let me fast truly for the first time this Lent. Forgive my transgressions and iniquities. Help me to pass this Lent in a manner pleasing to YOU. Make me to be willing to be obedient and humble and to do Your will instead of my own.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy upon me, a sinner.

Today is suspended on a tree He who suspended the earth upon the waters.

Today is suspended on a tree He who suspended the earth upon the waters.
The King of the angels is decked with a crown of thorns.
He who wraps the heavens in clouds is wrapped in the purple of mockery.
He who freed Adam in the Jordan is slapped on the face.
The Bridegroom of the Church is affixed to the Cross with nails.
The Son of the Virgin is pierced by a spear.
We worship Thy passion, O Christ.
We worship Thy passion, O Christ.
We worship Thy passion, O Christ.
Show us also Thy glorious resurrection.
(Hear the Chant)

Today I was not intending to go to church for the Twelve Passion Gospels. It's a very long service, with every one of the the readings of Christ's crucifixion, from the Last Supper, through the Betrayal, Trial, Crucifixion and Death of Our Lord. Our priest and deacon read every one of them. The service is about 3 hours long and frankly, it has been a really long week for me.

I went anyway.

Praise God. The Holy Spirit was truly there and when Father processed through the nave carrying the cross and then hung the icon of Christ on it, my eyes filled with tears for what He had done for me.

Thou wast crucified, O Christ, for my sake, that thou mightest pour forth salvation for me.
And thy side was pierced with a spear, that it might cause rivers of life to flow in me.
Thou wast fasten with the nails; and so realizing the depth of Thy Passion and
to Thy Crucifixion, O life-giving Savior

Nails and thorns and scourges and spitting and slapping...For the thief on the cross. For the adulterous woman. For the sinful woman. For the Canaanite woman and her daughter.

For me.

The least I can do is show up.

And be blessed. Oh, so very blessed.

Lord have mercy on me, a sinner.

Today the Triodion Begins

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
Open to me the door of repentance, O Life Giver,
For my sprirt rises to pray toward Thy Holy Temple
Bearing the temple of my body all defiled;
But in Thy compaasion,
Purify me by the loving kindness of Thy mercy
Both now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen
Lead me on the paths of salvation, O Mother of God,
for I have profaned my soul with shameful sins
and have wasted my life in laziness;
but by thy intercessions
deliver me from all impurity.
Have mercy on my O God according to Thy great mercy
and according to the multitude of Thy compassions,
blot out my transgressions.
When I think of the many evil things I have done;
wretch that I am,
I tremble at the fearful day of judgement,
but trustuing in Thy loving-kindness
like David I cry to Thee: Have mercy on me, O God,
Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, O God
according to Thy great mercy.

My Favorite Paschal Hymn

The Angel cried to the Lady full of grace: Rejoice, rejoice, O pure Virgin!
Again I say rejoice! Your Son is risen from His three days in the tomb.
With Himself He has raised all the dead.
Rejoice, rejoice O ye people.
Shine! Shine! Shine! O new Jerusalem.
The Glory of the Lord has shone on you.
Exult now, exult and be glad, O Zion.
Be radiant, O Pure Theotokos, in the Resurrection, the Resurrection of your Son!

Holy Theotokos, pray for me, a sinner!

The Paschal Homily of St John Chrysostom

If any man be devout and love God, let him enjoy this fair and radiant triumphal feast. If any man be a wise servant, let him rejoicing enter into the joy of his Lord. If any have labored long in fasting, let him now receive his recompense. If any have wrought from the first hour, let him today receive his just reward. If any have come at the third hour, let him with thankfulness keep the feast. If any have arrived at the sixth hour, let him have no misgivings; because he shall in nowise be deprived therefor. If any have delayed until the ninth hour, let him draw near, fearing nothing. If any have tarried even until the eleventh hour, let him, also, be not alarmed at his tardiness; for the Lord, who is jealous of his honor, will accept the last even as the first; he gives rest unto him who comes at the eleventh hour, even as unto him who has wrought from the first hour.

And he shows mercy upon the last, and cares for the first; and to the one he gives, and upon the other he bestows gifts. And he both accepts the deeds, and welcomes the intention, and honors the acts and praises the offering. Wherefore, enter you all into the joy of your Lord; and receive your reward, both the first, and likewise the second. You rich and poor together, hold high festival. You sober and you heedless, honor the day. Rejoice today, both you who have fasted and you who have disregarded the fast. The table is full-laden; feast ye all sumptuously. The calf is fatted; let no one go hungry away.

Enjoy ye all the feast of faith: Receive ye all the riches of loving-kindness. let no one bewail his poverty, for the universal kingdom has been revealed. Let no one weep for his iniquities, for pardon has shown forth from the grave. Let no one fear death, for the Savior's death has set us free. He that was held prisoner of it has annihilated it. By descending into Hell, He made Hell captive. He embittered it when it tasted of His flesh. And Isaiah, foretelling this, did cry: Hell, said he, was embittered, when it encountered Thee in the lower regions. It was embittered, for it was abolished. It was embittered, for it was mocked. It was embittered, for it was slain. It was embittered, for it was overthrown. It was embittered, for it was fettered in chains. It took a body, and met God face to face. It took earth, and encountered Heaven. It took that which was seen, and fell upon the unseen.

O Death, where is your sting? O Hell, where is your victory? Christ is risen, and you are overthrown. Christ is risen, and the demons are fallen. Christ is risen, and the angels rejoice. Christ is risen, and life reigns. Christ is risen, and not one dead remains in the grave. For Christ, being risen from the dead, is become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. To Him be glory and dominion unto ages of ages. Amen.

Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death
And upon those in the tombs bestowing life!

Lord I thank you for your mercy on me, a sinner!

The Twelve Passion Gospels

Great and Holy Thursday
The First Gospel
John 13:31-18:1
SO, WHEN HE HAD GONE OUT, Jesus said, Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately.
Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going, you cannot come,' so now I say to you. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.
Simon Peter said to Him, Lord, where are You going? Jesus answered him, Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward. Peter said to Him, Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake. Jesus answered him, Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times.
Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.
Thomas said to Him, Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way? Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him. Philip said to Him, Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us. Jesus said to him, Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.
Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever; the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him. Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?
Jesus answered and said to him, If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me. These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
You have heard Me say to you, 'I am going away and coming back to you.' If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, 'I am going to the Father,' for My Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me. But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.
I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.
By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples. As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.
These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.
These things I command you, that you love one another. If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
Remember the word that I said to you, 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. But all these things they will do to you for My name's sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. He who hates Me hates My Father also. If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father.
But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, 'They hated Me without a cause.' But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning. These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you. But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, 'Where are You going?'
But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me, because I go to the Father. Then some of His disciples said among themselves, What is this that He says to us, 'A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'; and, 'because I go to the Father'?

They said therefore, What is this that He says, 'A little while'? We do not know what He is saying. Now Jesus knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to them, Are you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, 'A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'?
Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you. And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.
Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you; for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God. I came forth from the Father and have come into the world. Again, I leave the world and go to the Father.
His disciples said to Him, See, now You are speaking plainly, and using no figure of speech! Now we are sure that You know all things, and have no need that anyone should question You. By this we believe that You came forth from God. Jesus answered them, Do you now believe? Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.
I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me.
I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.
I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth. I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.
And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.
When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered.

The Second Gospel

John 18:1-28
Jesus went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples. Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, Whom are you seeking? They answered Him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said to them, I am He. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, I am He, they drew back and fell to the ground. Then He asked them again, Whom are you seeking? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way, that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none. Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. So Jesus said to Peter, Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me? Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him. And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year. Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in. Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, You are not also one of this Man's disciples, are you? He said, I am not. Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself. The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine. Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said. And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Do You answer the high priest like that? Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me? Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. Therefore they said to him, You are not also one of His disciples, are you? He denied it and said, I am not! One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, Did I not see you in the garden with Him? Peter then denied again; and immediately a rooster crowed. Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.

The Third Gospel

Mat 26:57-75

The soldiers had laid hold of Jesus and led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. But Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest's courtyard. And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end. Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward and said, This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.' And the high priest arose and said to Him, Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You? But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God! Jesus said to him, It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! What do you think? They answered and said, He is deserving of death. Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, saying, Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?
Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, You also were with Jesus of Galilee. But he denied it before them all, saying, I do not know what you are saying. And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth. But again he denied with an oath, I do not know the Man! And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you. Then he began to curse and swear, saying, I do not know the Man! Immediately a rooster crowed. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times. So he went out and wept bitterly.
The Fourth Gospel

John 18:28-19:16

Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover. Pilate then went out to them and said, What accusation do you bring against this Man? They answered and said to him, If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you. Then Pilate said to them, You take Him and judge Him according to your law. Therefore the Jews said to him, It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death, that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die. Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, Are You the King of the Jews? Jesus answered him, Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me? Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here. Pilate therefore said to Him, Are You a king then? Jesus answered, You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice. Pilate said to Him, What is truth?
And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, I find no fault in Him at all. But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews? Then they all cried again, saying, Not this Man, but Barabbas! Now Barabbas was a robber.
So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. Then they said, Hail, King of the Jews! And they struck Him with their hands. Pilate then went out again, and said to them, Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him. Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, Behold the Man! Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, Crucify Him, crucify Him! Pilate said to them, You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him. The Jews answered him, We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God. Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, Where are You from? But Jesus gave him no answer. Then Pilate said to Him, Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You? Jesus answered, You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin. From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar's friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar.
When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, Behold your King! But they cried out, Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him! Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar! Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led Him away.

The Fifth Gospel

Mat 27:3-32
Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned by betraying innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? You see to it! Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood. And they consulted together and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, and gave them for the potter's field, as the LORD directed me. Now Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor asked Him, saying, Are You the King of the Jews? So Jesus said to him, It is as you say. And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing. Then Pilate said to Him, Do You not hear how many things they testify against You? But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished. And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? For he knew that they had handed Him over because of envy. While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.
But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. The governor answered and said to them, Which of the two do you want me to release to you? They said, Barabbas! Pilate said to them, What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ? They all said to him, Let Him be crucified! Then the governor said, Why, what evil has He done? But they cried out all the more, saying, Let Him be crucified! When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just Person. You see to it. And all the people answered and said, His blood be on us and on our children. Then he released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.

Christ the Bridegroom

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified. Now as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross.

The Sixth Gospel

Mark 15:16-32
Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison. And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head, and began to salute Him, Hail, King of the Jews! Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him. And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him. Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross. And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.
And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take. Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him. And the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS. With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left. So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, And He was numbered with the transgressors. And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself, and come down from the cross! Likewise the chief priests also, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said, He saved others; Himself He cannot save. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe.

The Crucifixion
The Seventh Gospel

Mat 27:33-54
When they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink. Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots. Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. And they put up over His head the accusation written against Him: this is Jesus the king of the Jews. Then two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left. And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.' Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.
Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, This Man is calling for Elijah! Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink. The rest said, Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him. And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God!

The Centurion

The Eighth Gospel

Luke 23:32-49
There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. Then Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do. And they divided His garments and cast lots. And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God. The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine, and saying, If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself. And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: this is the king of the Jews.
Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us. But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong. Then he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom. And Jesus said to him, Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.
Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit.' Having said this, He breathed His last. So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous Man! And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.

The Ninth Gospel

John 19:25-37

St John

Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, Woman, behold your son! Then He said to the disciple, Behold your mother! And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, I thirst! Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.
So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, It is finished! And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe. For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, Not one of His bones shall be broken. And again another Scripture says, They shall look on Him whom they pierced.
The Tenth Gospel

Mark 15:43-47
Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent council member, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, coming and taking courage, went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate marveled that He was already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him if He had been dead for some time. So when he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. Then he bought fine linen, took Him down, and wrapped Him in the linen. And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock, and rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses observed where He was laid.

The Eleventh Gospel

John 19:38-42
After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews' Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.
The Twelfth Gospel
Mat 27:62-66
On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, saying, Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise.' Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, 'He has risen from the dead.' So the last deception will be worse than the first. Pilate said to them, You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how. So they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting the guard.

The Epitaphion
On the same day, Lord, you granted the Robber paradise. Now by the wood of the Cross, illumine and save me, a sinner!

Lamentation

Seeing her own Lamb led to slaughter, Mary let down her hair in grief and followed Him with the other women, crying thus: "Where goest Thou, my Child? Why dost Thou run so swiftly? Perhaps there is another wedding in Cana of Galilee, and Thou dost make haste now to go there and change their water into wine? Shall I go with Thee, O my Child, or shall I wait for Thee? Grant me some word, O Word, and pass me not by in silence, O Thou who hast preserved me in virginity. For Thou art my Son and my God.

Holy Theotokos, pray to God for me, a sinner.

And so Lent begins...

Open to me the doors of repentance, O Life-giver. For my spirit rises early to pray towards Thy holy temple, bearing the temple of my body all defiled. But in Thy compassion, purify me by the loving kindness of Thy mercy.
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy; and according to the multitude of Thy compassions, blot out my transgression. When I think of the multitude of ghastly things I have done, wretch that I am, I tremble at the fearful day of Judgment. But trusting in the mercy of Thy loving kindness; like David I cry to Thee: Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy.

Please forgive me for any offenses I may have caused you.

Sunday of Orthodoxy

Today is the first Sunday of Lent. Today, we celebrate the Triumph of Orthodoxy which is the day the 7th Ecumenical Council ruled on the iconoclastic controversy, which had raged on and off since 726. The celebration of icons in worship and their veneration were restored on the first Sunday in Lent in 787.

The icon of the Sunday of Orthodoxy commemorates the “restoration” of icons in the churches and to their use in Orthodox worship. The focal point of the icon is an icon itself, the Virgin Hodegetria, a popular depiction of the Theotokos as “Directress,” or literally “She who shows the way to God.” To the left of the icon is the Empress Theodora and her son Michael III. To the right of the icon are the Patriarchs Methodios and Tarasios. The icon is surrounded by numerous saints who struggled against the Iconoclastic heresy.

As usual on this day, we celebrated at a pan-Orthodox Vespers service at St Barbara's Greek Orthodox Church in Durham. Fr Nicholas was there from my church as well as the host priest, Fr James and surprisingly, Fr Dmitri from my son's godmother's church. Both Fr James and Fr Dmitri remembered me and I know Fr Dmitri hasn't met me more than twice and Fr James only once! Mom was right when she said  people watching goes both ways. LOL! Both of them, and Fr Nicholas, blessed Gabriel. He is such a great kid. Everyone loves him. Afterward, we had a great Lenten meal in the rectory and Gabriel got to play with some of his friends from church.

I love being part of a church that honors the history of it's doctrine. Sometimes I think that people discard history far too lightly. If we do not know why we worship as we do, what is the point of worshipping? The why is just as important as the Who. After all, the Who is the One who gave us this style of worship; He is the why! It's in the Old Testament -- poke around in the Pentateuch and then compare it to what we do in the Orthodox Church. It's amazingly similar. The first Christians were Jewish and worshipped in the Temple after all!

What really made my heart full, though, was listening to Gabriel and watching him during the prayers. He knows the prayers, even when they are said in Greek, simply by the rhythm I suppose. He recognized when to cross and frowned as the chanters sang, "Kyrie Eleison". When I asked him what was wrong he said, "I don't know what they said. But shouldn't it be Lord have mercy?" When I told him that was what Kyrie Eleison meant, he gave me such a look. LOL! And the various priests and deacons recognized him too. He makes quite an impression. I'm proud to be his mama.

Anyway...
As the Prophets beheld, as the Apostles have taught, as the Church has received, as the Teachers have dogmatized, as the universe has agreed, as Grace has shown forth, as Truth has revealed, as falsehood has been dissolved, as Wisdom has presented, as Christ has awarded: thus we declare, thus we assert, thus we preach Christ our true God, and honor His Saints in words, in writings, in thoughts, in sacrifices, in churches, in Holy Icons; on the one hand worshiping and reverencing Christ as God and Lord; and on the other hand honoring as true servants of the same Lord of all, and accordingly offering them veneration.
This is the Faith of the Apostles; this is the Faith of the Fathers; this is the Faith of the Orthodox; this is the Faith which has established the universe!

Amen!

Lord have mercy on me, a sinner!
